The Vinnet bird protection net helps farmers save up to 90% of their grape harvest from costly bird damage.
It is perfect for grape growers using the VSP trellis system as it still allows for good air flow while protecting crops from bird beaks and claws.
Recommended by WWF South Africa, and recognised as a WWF Conservation Champion, Vinnet is an effective, and environmentally friendly addition to any vineyard’s bird management programme. Ideal for organic grape farmers, and viticulturalists around South Africa.
Developed by a Viticulturalist for
vineyard management
The innovator behind the Vinnet bird net is Johan Montgomery – the Vineyard Manager of Hamilton Russell Vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
Frustrated by losing up to 50% of his harvest to bird damage, Montgomery began his research and development by experimenting with various netting solutions between 2004 and 2006.
Block trials of the Vinnet bird protection net prototypes were conducted at Cape Bay Wines and Hamilton Russell Vineyards as well as in Grabouw, and an effective netting solution was developed.
Benefits of the Vinnet bird protection system:
- It has been developed for wine grape growers using the trellis system
The design of Vinnet allows for healthy air flow, while preventing problem birds from reaching the ripening fruit
- It is an affordable method of preventing damage to grapes, and can be used for up to three seasons if installed and maintained correctly
Vinnet is light weight, and can be carried by one person
- It can be installed by two people working together to carry and affix the net
