The inventor behind the Vinnet bird net is Johan Montgomery – the Vineyard Manager of Hamilton Russell Vineyards in Hermanus South Africa.

Frustrated by losing up to 50% of his harvest to bird damage, Montgomery began experimenting with various solutions between 2004 and 2006. Block trials were conducted at Cape Bay Wines and Hamilton Russell Vineyards as well as at Grabouw, and an effective netting solution was developed.
